One of these days my 13-year-old is going to need to start saving for a car.
I told her: you can work toward that car with a $7.25 burger-flipping job, or you can start a business, build a portfolio, and position yourself for college (she’s going into a technical field that requires it).
She was intrigued.
I showed her how she and I (and eventually, she alone) can build the kind of basic websites a local business needs. And there are tons of businesses without one.
They’re at risk of becoming invisible.
They pay hundreds of dollars to be in the Yellow Pages, which nobody uses anymore.
Now, when we drive around town, Regina points out businesses and wonders which ones have websites.
I know some web design people will be horrified: “Woods,” they’ll say, “you need all kinds of technical know-how to create whiz-bang websites!”
Local businesses don’t need and shouldn’t want whiz-bang websites. They need something simple and attractive. That’s what Regina and I will do.
You know these businesses need websites, and you know nobody else is approaching them with an offer to build one.

You may as well go ahead and have your limbs removed if you’re not using Facebook to promote your business, or to support your earn-dough-online efforts. Because that’s metaphorically what you’re doing to your chances at success.
I’ll bet many of you have no idea what you can do with this thing. Check this out:
(1) I can pitch RonPaulHomeschool.com to people who have expressed an interest in both Ron Paul AND homeschooling.
(2) I can target people who have visited my site but not yet ordered. This is called retargeting, and it’s incredibly effective.
(3) I can upload my email marketing list to Facebook. Facebook will then find the people on my list if they have Facebook accounts, and show them my ad. So even if they don’t open my emails (can you imagine that??), I can chase them around Facebook until they engage with me.
(4) I can have Facebook create “lookalike audiences” — people whose characteristics are the same as those who already follow me, or subscribe to my email list, or whatever. And then I can pitch my ads to them, so I never run out of people I can market to.
Folks, this is the tip of the iceberg. If you’re not learning and mastering this, do you see the advantage you’re handing your competitors?

You have options online. Among them:
You can create a product and sell it.
You can start a membership site for recurring dough every month.
You can start an online store and drop-ship physical products (an underrated option, by the way).
You can sell other people’s products as an affiliate and earn commissions.
Let’s focus on that last one.
The really good affiliate marketers are millionaires. The pretty good ones earn in the six figures.
There isn’t nearly as much competition as you’d think. In the Internet marketing world, for example, if you do an even halfway decent promotion of someone’s product launch, you’re almost guaranteed to finish among the top 10 affiliates and win a prize in addition to your commissions.
Some of these are really big prizes.
A lot of the time, people who aren’t particularly good writers (believe me, I’m on their email lists) and who don’t seem like they went to fancy schools are winning these prizes.
Here is the entire model they follow:
(1) Build an email list of people interested in their niche.
(2) Send affiliate offers to that list.
The bigger the list, the more they earn.
So:
(3) Keep building the list.
Yes, that’s really it.
Is there any reason you couldn’t start taking a crack at that a couple hours a week, and see what happens?
Here’s the tricky part: how do you drive traffic to your website or squeeze page so you can start building that lucrative email list?

Academics are truly hopeless. Almost none of them can be bothered to learn how to promote their own work. Almost none of them have an email list. Almost none have a product — maybe a book here and there, but no upsell product: no courses, no membership site, no nothing.
Then they whine about their obscurity.
Know what, snowflake?
IT’S YOUR FAULT.
I will not be one of these lame email marketers who tells his list, “It’s not your fault you’re not succeeding!”
B.S. It IS your fault.
I see swamp dwellers with IQs of 60 winning five-figure affiliate contest prizes. If you’re not learning how to do that, is that the swamp dwellers’ fault?

The Internet marketing world consists of two kinds of people: reputable entrepreneurs who genuinely want what’s best for their followers, and knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers who just want to lighten people’s wallets.
Which group is dominant? The jury is still out.
One guy I can vouch for, based on my own experience, is the heroic Kevin Fahey.
