My Kindergarten Teacher Said I Might Be ‘Mildly Retarded’

Posted by: By Tom Woods | January 16, 2017

I learned to read before I was three years old.

This did not impress the kindergarten teacher at the Hood School, who broke the news to my parents that I might be “mildly retarded.”

She proceeded to list a series of things I couldn’t do. One of them was skipping. (What kind of boy skips in the first place?) I’ll never forget that night, when my extended family vainly skipped through the living room, as I cried in the corner.

Also, my drawings were terrible. He doesn’t draw hands on his people!

Um, their hands were behind their backs, genius.

I wound up flourishing when we moved to another town and I entered a different school. My mother later told the whole story in a blistering letter to the editor of the local newspaper in our old town.

I’ll admit, though: to this day I have zero artistic ability and no design sense to speak of. But like anyone doing anything online, I need designs for eBooks, box covers, Facebook ads, flyers, logos, and other things, too.

Outsourcing works, but it can be pricey, and you can wind up unsatisfied and with no recourse.

The whole situation is frustrating and expensive.

Or you can try to do it yourself, and wind up putting out product that makes you look like an idiot.
